Abstract
A deep social upheaval was caused, in Asturias, by the War of Cuba (1895-1898), which resulted from the large presence of Asturian emigrants on the island and the intense material possessions and emotional bonds existing between our region and the Great Antilla. This work takes us from the importance of that relationship and the weight of the Asturian community on that island to analyze the attitudes in the Principality with regards to the fight against the Cuban independentists and also the United States intervention in the conflict; from the initial enthusiasm, to the later disillusion and the final revitalization of a popular patriotism without hope, since the lack of military proportion condemned Spain, almost inexorably, to be defeated.
